What Is Recaldent? A Simple Explanation

You may have seen the name Recaldent® on certain sugar-free chewing gums or oral-care products and wondered what it actually means. While the name can sound technical, Recaldent itself is not a treatment, medication, or flavour. It refers to a specific ingredient technology used in some oral-care products.

This article explains what Recaldent is, where it comes from, and why it is commonly used in sugar-free chewing gum.

What does Recaldent mean?

Recaldent® is the trademarked name for a technology based on an ingredient called CPP-ACP.

CPP-ACP stands for casein phosphopeptide–amorphous calcium phosphate. It is derived from milk protein (casein) and is designed to carry calcium and phosphate in a stable form within the mouth.

When a product is described as containing Recaldent, it means that this CPP-ACP technology has been included as part of the formulation.

What is CPP-ACP?

CPP-ACP is a compound developed through Australian dental research. It combines two key components:

  • Casein phosphopeptides (CPP), derived from milk protein
  • Calcium and phosphate (ACP), minerals that naturally occur in teeth

The role of the casein component is to help keep calcium and phosphate stable and available in the mouth. Because of this property, CPP-ACP has been incorporated into a range of oral-care products, including chewing gum and dental creams.

Important: Because CPP-ACP is derived from milk, products containing Recaldent are not suitable for people with a milk protein allergy.

Is Recaldent a brand or an ingredient?

This is a common point of confusion.

  • Recaldent is the trademarked name for the CPP-ACP technology
  • CPP-ACP is the ingredient itself
  • Different products may contain CPP-ACP in different formats or concentrations

Recaldent is not a flavour and does not describe a type of gum by itself. It simply indicates that the product contains CPP-ACP.

Why is Recaldent used in chewing gum?

Chewing gum is a convenient format for oral-care ingredients because it is often used after meals or drinks and naturally stimulates saliva flow while chewing.

Sugar-free chewing gum is already widely used as part of everyday habits. Recaldent-containing gums build on this familiar routine and are designed to be enjoyed casually, rather than used as a replacement for brushing or other oral-care practices.

Where did Recaldent come from?

The CPP-ACP technology behind Recaldent was developed in Australia through university-based dental research and later commercialised for use in oral-care products.

Today, Recaldent products are especially popular in Japan, where sugar-free chewing gum plays a strong role in everyday oral-care routines. In Japanese pharmacies and convenience stores, Recaldent gum is commonly available in a wide range of flavours and formats.

Is Recaldent gum sugar-free?

Yes. Recaldent chewing gums are sugar-free and are typically sweetened with sugar substitutes such as xylitol, maltitol, or similar ingredients.

This makes them suitable for regular, everyday chewing as part of a general oral-care routine.

Who typically chooses Recaldent gum?

Recaldent chewing gum is commonly chosen by people who:

  • Prefer sugar-free chewing gum
  • Chew gum after meals, snacks, or drinks
  • Are looking for a premium chewing gum option as part of their daily routine

As with all products containing CPP-ACP, it should not be used by individuals with a milk protein allergy.
