How a traditional Japanese beverage inspired decades of research into oral health, fresh breath and everyday wellness.
When most people think about green tea, they think about a warm drink enjoyed for its refreshing taste and healthy reputation. In Japan, however, green tea has inspired something much bigger. Researchers have spent decades investigating the unique compounds found in green tea and how they may support everyday oral health.
Today, green tea ingredients can be found in Japanese chewing gum, toothpaste, mouth rinses and other oral care products. But why has green tea attracted so much attention, and what does the research actually show?
What Are Green Tea Catechins?
Green tea contains naturally occurring plant compounds called catechins. These are a type of polyphenol and are among the most studied components of green tea.
The best-known green tea catechin is EGCG, short for epigallocatechin gallate. Green tea also contains other catechins, including EGC, ECG and EC. Together, these compounds have been studied for their antioxidant properties and their interaction with bacteria in the mouth.
Why Researchers Are Interested in Green Tea and Oral Health
The mouth contains a complex community of bacteria. Some live on the teeth and gums, while others collect on the tongue. Many are harmless, but certain bacteria are involved in plaque formation, acid production and unpleasant breath odours.
Green tea catechins have been studied because they appear to interact with some of these bacteria and their by-products. This does not mean green tea replaces brushing, flossing or professional dental care. Instead, it helps explain why green tea has become such an interesting ingredient in Japanese oral care products.
Green Tea and Fresh Breath
One of the most interesting areas of research is fresh breath.
Many cases of bad breath are linked to volatile sulphur compounds, often called VSCs. These are gases produced when bacteria on the tongue and in the mouth break down proteins.
Research has explored how green tea catechins may interact with these sulphur compounds and the bacteria that produce them. This is one reason green tea has become an ingredient of interest in products designed for mouth freshness.
Green Tea and Saliva
Saliva is one of the mouth's most important natural defences. It helps keep the mouth comfortable, supports swallowing and taste, helps wash away food particles and contributes to the natural balance of the oral environment.
Chewing sugar-free gum stimulates saliva flow. When green tea ingredients are included in a chewing gum format, the result is a product that combines saliva stimulation from chewing with the ingredient story of green tea catechins.
Our Experience with Green Tea Technology
At BreezeCare Oral Health, our interest in green tea technology began many years ago when we stocked an USA-made chewing gum called DryGuard.
DryGuard was developed using green tea technology licensed from Camellix and introduced many of our customers to the idea that chewing gum could be more than just a fresh breath product.
Unfortunately, DryGuard is no longer available. However, it strengthened our interest in green tea catechins, saliva support and the way innovative chewing gums can fit into everyday oral care routines.
Today, that interest continues through our Japanese Oral Care Collection, including products such as POSCa F®, a Japanese sugar-free chewing gum that contains POs-Ca® and fluoride derived from Japanese green tea.
Why Japan Continues to Explore Green Tea
Green tea has a long cultural history in Japan. It is part of daily life, hospitality and wellness. It is therefore not surprising that Japanese researchers and manufacturers have continued exploring how green tea ingredients can be used in modern oral care products.
Japanese oral care is often built around daily habits. Rather than thinking only about problems after they occur, many products are designed to fit naturally into everyday routines: after meals, after coffee, during work, while travelling or before social situations.
Green Tea, Functional Gum and Everyday Oral Care
This is where Japanese functional chewing gums become especially interesting.
Some gums focus on xylitol. Some focus on calcium. Recaldent® uses CPP-ACP, a milk-derived calcium and phosphate technology. POSCa F® takes a different approach by combining POs-Ca® with green tea-derived fluoride.
These products are not all trying to be the same gum. They reflect Japan's broader interest in functional foods and daily oral care habits.
Does Green Tea Replace Normal Oral Care?
No. Green tea does not replace toothbrushing, flossing, fluoride toothpaste or regular dental visits.
The more useful way to think about green tea oral care products is as part of a broader daily routine. For example, a sugar-free gum may be used after meals or coffee when brushing is not practical. A toothpaste or mouth rinse may include green tea ingredients as part of its formulation.
Green tea is not a magic ingredient, but it is an ingredient with a long cultural history and a growing body of scientific interest.
Why This Matters for Australian Customers
Many Australian oral care products are built around familiar categories: toothpaste, mouthwash, floss and breath mints.
Japanese oral care often feels different because products are designed for specific daily habits. Chewing gum, lozenges, toothpastes and rinses may each have their own functional ingredient story.
For Australian customers, this opens the door to a different way of thinking about oral health: not just as something managed morning and night, but as something supported throughout the day.
Final Thoughts
Green tea is much more than a traditional drink. It has inspired decades of research into catechins, oral bacteria, saliva and fresh breath.
At BreezeCare Oral Health, our interest began with DryGuard and continues today through our carefully selected Japanese Oral Care Collection.
As this blog series continues, we will explore more of the ingredients and ideas behind Japanese oral care, including Recaldent®, POSCa F®, functional chewing gums, saliva support and Japan's unique approach to everyday wellness.
